The new dump is located north east going towards Tecate; it’s a little over one hour from the old dump site. Many miles of dirt road from the highway and with very little transportation, many have to hitchhike. For the same reason many build sheds of cardboard to stay night’s at a time to save on travel time and bus fares.
We know this first hand, since we have a couple of members from our church working there. There are 300 to 500 workers working at a time. All work for themselves but they all have to recycle at the only recycling center available.
Meaning that there is a monopoly and the people get a bad and cheap exchange for their goods. But like the old saying goes, one man’s trash becomes another man’s treasure, becomes another man’s livelihood.
Many people work here because they have no paper work, no I.D’s, no education and so on. So they are forced to work in these kinds of conditions, and to make matters worse they are forced to bring their children to the dump because they cannot afford daycare. With nowhere for them to play, they stay outside the dump in their cardboard sheds while they wait for their parents.
We would love to raise funds for these many children who have no hope unless somebody acts on their behalf. We would love to open a small facility for children where they could stay and play and receive some education while they wait for their parents!
If you are looking for a worthy project that will affect many lives and impact generations to come, would you consider investing? You do not need to go around the world when it’s only a stone throw from the USA.
