Discipleship and Recovery Program of La Roca Ministries

The Discipleship and Recovery program of La Roca is largely an urban ministry. Our Program is grounded in our faith in the true and living God, based on our belief in His Holy Word, and guided with the testimonies of other Christians, in order to treat the epidemic of drugs and alcohol addiction. Addiction affects an individual not just physically and economically, but spiritually, emotionally, and socially. Therefore, each aspect of an addict’s life must be treated and healed from the destructiveness that results from abusing drugs, of which an aspect includes the addict’s relationships including but not limited to: spouse, parents, children, friends and neighbors.

Although some conventional methods are also used to treat this complex problem, it is the power of Christ, which is far greater that any other means, that we hold to for every step and method in the process. We believe the reason Christ gave us no definitive way of treatment is because Christ is our definitive way of treatment. He clamed “I am the way…” and when He is present, all other ways become secondary. Without Christ, man is too limited in his understanding and management of drug addiction and its caused treatment and cure.

Currently, there is no program that allows for the whole families to stay together while addiction recovery takes place. In many programs, children are sent to orphanages while fathers and mothers are separated, which we find somewhat contradictory to Biblical standards. Although Christ is more important than family, it is Christ who created family, and it is good! Therefore, it is our desire to bring the whole family into the program, while mother and children can stay together receiving consoling, while seeing the fathers change.

This will also eliminate the doubts and lack of trust that have come from years of lying and empty promises. By being there together hey would be able to witness for themselves the efforts of the husband/father, while receiving healing themselves.

THE CHALLENGE

The challenge begins with the city of Tijuana itself. Whole communities are afflicted by an international epidemic of drugs and alcohol abuse. As Tijuana has become a bottleneck of sorts for people all across Latin America who are trying to get into the United States, the crowded streets, corrupt police, corrupt government and lack of jobs and housing has created a perfect storm for Tijuana to become an international hub for the drug trade.

Ruthlessly and indiscriminately it strikes the lives of men, women and children of every age, sex race and class. As local gangs fight for control of the seemingly indispensable cash flow
Of the millions of illegal dollars streaming thought Tijuana every year, the drug trade constantly and consistently decimates individuals, families and entire neighborhoods, creating a physical, emotional, economic and spiritual crisis.

While the government in Tijuana attempts to tackle the victimizers in the drug trade, one of the aims at La Roca Ministries is to pickup its victims. Drug addiction, including unmanageable alcohol use, is extremely deceptive. It is never the aim of an addict to become hooked on drugs. Nor is it his/her intention to cause personal failure, or make loved ones hurt and grieve from unnecessary events, lifetime injuries or untimely deaths. However, the first step in the process to being rebuilt is to be broken. The desire to change coming from and addict is far removed, that it usually takes a disaster for true repentance to seep in. Only then, can we truly start making a difference if their lives.

We at La Roca believe with faith we can transform this City which is amidst all kinds of crime. We are not leaving, we are here to stay! We are here by God mercy to take it for the Glory of His Name. Where once the city of sin, but will be known as the city where God abides in!

The city of bars and Motels, but it will be known as the city of living churches. Where once the city of homosexuality, but will be known the city of freedom. Where once known as the city of drugs, it will be known as the city of godly men and women, by the unfailing grace of God of who has commanded us to “war not with flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness.” (Eph. 6:12)

Thank you for being part of this mission and this vision. We believe in the power of God to transform individuals, just like it has transformed Rafael once a drug dealer, Rudy was a hit man for gangs, Mario, Silvia, Alijandra and I, who like Paul can state to be the worse of sinners! I don’t write “tear-jerkers”, but I write knowing that the Kingdom of God is not in word, but in power! (1 Cor. 4:20)

This has been the long awaited vision and perhaps one could say destiny for La Roca Ministries. This “Family Housing” project has been part of our grand objective and goal from the beginning, with the aim to bring families together instead of separating them.

Unlike, most churches and recovery centers now-a-days, which use the individualistic, medical/disease model to address problem’s that originate with sin and the psyche i.e. (the soul), we here at La Roca ministries have the idea that people and their problems are not purely dealt with on an individualistic manner, but as communities.

“No man is an island.” Apostle Paul understood this principal and dealt not with the problems of the churches on an individual basis, but mainly, on the Church families as a whole. When a black sheep goes astray they lead others with them, and when a father plunges into alcohol abuse, the entire family is affected. And if the problem is not dealt with in its effects passes on to the next generation, which is not just a Biblical concept, but a reality.

So would you join us in this flight, for it requires the unity of the body of Christ? We along could not flight this battle, this is a calling as a body not just a few.
